Summary
Sailing instructions by Juan Fernández Ladrillero relating to his ca. 1557-1559 voyage to the coast of Chile. Ladrillero was the first European to navigate the Strait of Magellan from its western entrance to its eastern and back again. The original of this derrotero is not known to be extant. This scribal copy was made in 1573. At the top of one folio is a note "El original deste se dio a Aguirre para llevar a Q[uit]o (?) afio de 73 en 25 de mayo. Sacose de los de Don Garcia de Mendoca". An almost identical note occurs in the only recorded copy of the derrotero of Ladrillero's companion Ojea, which was written in Madrid in 1566 and is now in the Archivo de Indias. The originals of both derroteros are lost. Aguirre has been tentatively identified as Francisco de Aguirre, who attempted to establish himself as Governor of Chile in the years of anarchy which preceded Mendoza's arrival and was still in the country in the. 1570s. At the end of the note, in a different hand, is the name Cespedes. This may possibly be Andres Garcia de Cespedes, the distinguished mathematician and hydrographer who became cosmografo mayor de Indias in 1596
