Complete copy of the Qur'an preceeded by five leaves that include a one-page introduction followed by diagrams of the seven readings of the Qur'ān (f. 1v-5r): (1) Nāfiʿ (2) Ibn Kathīr (3) Ibn Amīr of Damascus (4) Abū ʿAmr b. Al-ʿAlāʾ (5) ʿAāṣim (6) Ḥamzah (7) Kisāʾī. Eight leaves have been replaced and rewritten in a different hand, style, and paper (f. 226-231, 534-536). Some marginalia was lost when leaves were remounted.

Notes

• Paper is laid with visible laid lines with a slight curve up at the outer margin; very few inclusions and no visible fibers; lightly sized, not stiff. Replacement pages are later paper with visible laid lines, more heavily sized and burnished; much crisper.

Bound in worn red-dyed leather with flap (Type II) with several burn marks. Dark blue textile doublure of the flap and hinge; lined paper doublure on inside covers. Likely rebound.

Layout

5-12 lines with an average of 9 long lines if framed, and 11 if unframed; some marginalia.

Decoration

31 polychrome dual page illuminations in blue, red, gold, green, and black. The illuminated frames hold Hadith quotations in thuluth script in white ink on gold background. Seven diagrams of the readings of the Qurʾān in gold, red, and blue. Numerous other polychrome marginal medallions to mark text partitions. Sūrah headings in gold and blue. Floral roundels in gold, blue, red mark verse endings, sometimes simplified to gold enclosed in a blue circle. Readings in red. Marginalia in red and blue.

Script

Bihari in heavy black ink; pointed and vocalized. Hadith quotes in thuluth. Replacement text in differently styled Bihari.
