Summary

Isaac Alfasi's commentary on some tractates of the Talmud. Contains the commentary of Rashi and additional glosses from Tosafot, Mordekhai and others on the margins.

Notes

• Folios 1 and 9 largely illegible through damp.
   
• Folios 232-233 were previously bound with another volume (Add. 17050).
   
• Shemu᾿el de Modena, dated 1653, Verona: inscribed in a record of death: folio 234v.
   
• Camillo Jaghel: inscribed with his name, 1613 (folio 231v); see 50-56.
   
• Fra Giro[lamo] de Durazzano de Predi[?]: censor's signature and note 1640 (folio 231v). (Narkiss reads the name Durallano), on him see 89.
   
• Laurentius Franguellus (fl. until 1596): inscribed with his name, 1575 (folios 231v, 233v); see 78, appendix § 105-110.

Layout

Columns: 2; ruled lines: 35; written lines: 34; Uniform layout. Visible quire by quire pricking and page by page (brown) plummet ruling, also for the margins. Commentary in a small semi-cursive script provided around the main text. Last line of writing written within the ruling. Hair side and flesh side of folios distinguishable. Occasionally additional notes. Repeated words at the beginning of columns. Decorated horizontal catchwords.

Script

Ashkenazi square and semi-cursive script of the 14th century. Shemayah: inscribed with his name in the colophon, folio 210v. Written for Mosheh ben Yosef: inscribed, folio 210.

Provenance

• Acquisition: Thomas Rodd the younger (b. 1796, d. 1849): purchased from him by the British Museum on 23 October 1847 (Macdonald's sale, lot 157): inscribed, [235v].
