Summary

Festival prayer book (maḥzor) for the Special Shabatot, Pesaḥ, Shavu῾ot with the Book of Ruth, and Ninth of Av with the Book of Lamentations, Ashkenazi rite (aka 'Tinted Maḥzor').

Layout

Columns: 1 2; ruled lines: 16 26; written lines: 15 25; Uniform layout. Visible pricking and hard-point ruling. Initial words written in larger characters. Hair side and flesh side are distinguishable. Numerous marginal notes and additions in different handwritings. Watermark on folio [405 recto] of a monogram VCF. Instead of catchwords, the end and the beginning of the quires are numbered with Hebrew characters included into decorated panels starting with alef (numerical value 1) on folios 15v-16r. Folio 7 is bound upside down. Numerous words and passages have been crossed out by a censor (e.g., folios 17r, 38r, 42v, 49v, 57r, 61r, 70r, 86r, 107v, 147r, 173r, 174v, 215r, 263r, 377v, 397r; entire poems, e.g., folios 58v-59v, 291v, 382v-383v).

Script

Ashkenazi square and semi-cursive script, partially punctuated. Yitsḥaḳ: the name Yitsḥaḳ is marked many times, e.g. folios 10r, 17v, 36v, 51r, 77v, 284r, 307v.

Provenance

• Acquisition: Giuseppe Almanzi (b. 1801, d. 1860), bibliophile: his library including 322 medieval Hebrew manuscripts were purchased en bloc by the British Museum in October 1865 for £1,000 through Adolphus Asher (b. 1800, d. 1853), Berlin bookseller and dealer to the British Museum (see 131-153: inscribed (folio [406v]).
