Layout

Columns: 1 ; ruled lines: 16; written lines: 15; Uniform layout. Visible pricking and hard-point ruling. Initial words written in larger characters. Hair side and flesh side are distinguishable. A number of marginal notes, partly filling up omissions in the text and sometimes containing notes on the text. The spaces left for the ornamental designs have as a rule not been filled in (see e.g., folio 20r, 20v). Gilt edges.

Script

Ashkenazi square script, punctuated, of the 14th century.

Provenance

• Acquisition: Giuseppe Almanzi (b. 1801, d. 1860), bibliophile; his manuscript no. 64: his library including 322 medieval Hebrew manuscripts were purchased en bloc by the British Museum in October 1865 for £1,000 through Asher & Co., Berlin dealer to the British Museum (see 131-153: inscribed, folio [251v].
