3 column(s); ruled lines: 32; written lines: 31; Uniform layout. Ruled by hard-point on hair-side, last leaves ruled with pencil on each side. Larger square initial words. Pentateuch written in three columns, last pages with Targum around the main text. Masorah magna in two lines at the top and three lines at the bottom of the page. Part I: 3 column(s); ruled lines: 32; written lines: 31; Three kinds of section distinguished throughout the manuscript: סדורות, סתומות, פתוחות. The letters ס פ are often omitted or placed contrary to the masoretic rules (). Masorah magna occupies two lines of the upper margin and three lines of the lower margin.

Script

Ashkenazi script, square for the main text, semi-cursive and partially cursive for targum and commentaries, of 12th to 13th century.Part I: Ashkenazi square script, probably of 12 or 13th century.Part II: Ashkenazi square and semi-cursive handwriting, probably of 13th century.

Provenance

• Acquisition: Adam Clarke (b. 1762, d. 1832), Wesleyan Methodist minister and scholar. His bookplate with Greek inscription: ho theos agape estin ([i verso]). This codex, together with nine other manuscripts (Add MS 9398-9407) was acquired by the British Museum in 1834, once the property of the Hagen family and then bought for Adam Clarke.
