Notes

• Ḥayim Kohen: probably of folios 1-307: the word Kohen is marked many times, e.g., 95r, 104r, 116v, 128v, 262r; the word Ḥayim is decorated on 204r.
   
• Probably censored by Hippolite of Ferrara, Franciscan: inscribed 'Fra Hipp. Ferr' (active at the end of the 16th century-beginning of 17th century, in Cremona) (folio 323v), see 18-19, 93.
   
• Nataniel Noel (fl. 1681, d. 1753), employed by Edward Harley for buying books and manuscripts chiefly on the Continent, where his agent was George Suttie (): sold to Edward Harley on 18 January 1723/4; date inscribed ([ii recto]).

Layout

Columns: 1 ; ruled lines: 24 26; written lines: 23 25; Pricking and ruling are visible. Watermark on iii recto, of a fleur de lys, similar to 7126 (dated 1582, Vicenza). Watermark, [324r], of a horn included into a crowned shield and with the letters LVG, similar to 2745 (dated 1755, London). Closely cut margins. A large number of smaller and greater omissions from text, Targum and commentary have been subsequently supplied in the margins by various hands.

Script

Ashkenazi square and semi-cursive script, partially punctuated.

Provenance

• Acquisition: The Harley Collection, formed by Robert Harley (b. 1661, d. 1724), 1st earl of Oxford and Mortimer, politician, and Edward Harley (b. 1689, d. 1741), 2nd earl of Oxford and Mortimer, book collector and patron of the arts. Edward Harley bequeathed the library to his widow, Henrietta Cavendish, née Holles (b. 1694, d. 1755) during her lifetime and thereafter to their daughter, Margaret Cavendish Bentinck (b. 1715, d.1785), duchess of Portland; the manuscripts were sold by the Countess and the Duchess in 1753 to the nation for £10,000 (a fraction of their contemporary value) under the Act of Parliament that also established the British Museum; the Harley manuscripts form one of the foundation collections of the British Library.
