Post-1600; black leather Harleian binding; the Harley coat of arms in the centre.

Layout

Columns: 2; ruled lines: 22; written lines: 22; Samuel, Kings, Ezekiel, Joel, Micah and Haggai begin a new column, and Isaiah commences a new leaf. The margin of the manuscript contains the ḳeri and the beginning of the Hafṭarot. The titles of the books are written at the top of every recto and the leaves are numbered with Hebrew letters. Pricking and ruling (of bifolios, with hard-point on the hair-side) visible. Visible difference between flesh and hair side.

Decoration

Ornamental pen and ink designs of the chain pattern at the end of some of the books.

Script

Sefardi square script, punctuated. Ben Mosheh ha-Leṿi: inscribed with his name in partailly preserved colophon on folio 349v : ב"ר מ[שה?] הלוי זצ"ל (for manuscripts of the same scribe see e.g. 23, 654).

Provenance

• Acquisition: Edward Harley; inscription by Harley's librarian, Humfrey Wanley, currently illegilble (). The Harley Collection, formed by Robert Harley (b. 1661, d. 1724), 1st earl of Oxford and Mortimer, politician, and Edward Harley (b. 1689, d. 1741), 2nd earl of Oxford and Mortimer, book collector and patron of the arts. Edward Harley bequeathed the library to his widow, Henrietta Cavendish, née Holles (b. 1694, d. 1755) during her lifetime and thereafter to their daughter, Margaret Cavendish Bentinck (b. 1715, d.1785), duchess of Portland; the manuscripts were sold by the Countess and the Duchess in 1753 to the nation for £10,000 (a fraction of their contemporary value) under the Act of Parliament that also established the British Museum; the Harley manuscripts form one of the foundation collections of the British Library.
