Summary

Mahzor containing liturgical poems for New Year (Rosh ha-Shanah), the Day of Atonement (Yom Kippur) and the Feast of Tabernacles (Sukkot). Occasional rubrics in Judeo-Arabic. Folios 1-10 and 125-142 are made of different paper from the rest of the manuscript. Folios 4b-7b now contain a few songs (pizmonim), added by a different hand. The manuscript has a horizontal format.

• Spine partly exposed. Sewing fragile and boards detaching from text block. Bookworm holes.
   
• Folios 4b-7b: a different hand added in Sephardi semi-cursive script some liturgical poems (פזמונים, רשות לקדיש).

Foliation

Modern pencil foliation in Arabic numerals at the top outer corner of side a of each folio. One unnumbered folio between folios 6 and 7, two between 10 and 11 and one between 68 and 69.

Quarter binding with brown leather on spine and boards. Red and off-white thread on endbands. Sewn on two raised cords.

Sephardi semi-cursive script.

Colophon

The text of the Mahzor is found on folios 11a-124b. Liturgical poems of the type סליחה, פזמון, בקשה, רשות, רהוט, תיקון etc. Sporadic Tiberian vocalisation.

Provenance

• Acquired by The John Rylands Library from the heirs of Moses Gaster in 1954. Front board: Paper label with number 1821a. Front paste-down: Number 1821 handwritten in blue crayon. Folios 1a-4a and 130b-142b: Pen trials and notes in Hebrew. Folio 1a: Several ownership notes, including Isaac [...], Hayyim Ibn Dunan [...]. Folio 9a: ownership note in Hebrew reading "זה הספר שלי אני הצעיר מאיר אזולאי ". Folio 11a: Handwritten note in pencil reading "N. 26"and number 1821 handwritten in ink. Folio 132a: Owner's note: Simeon.
