Summary

This Book of Hours of the Use of Paris, produced in Paris or Tours between 1480 and 1500, includes a triple-graded French calendar containing many saints associated with Paris. The calendar is illustrated with marginal vignettes representing the labors of the months and the signs of the Zodiac. Each of the four Gospel Lessons is introduced with a large miniature, as are the Obsecro te and O intemerata prayers. The Hours of the Virgin is intercalated with the Hours of the Cross and Hours of the Holy Spirit in the habitual manner. The Penitential Psalms are introduced by a miniature of David and Goliath, and the Office of the Dead by a miniature of a young couple meeting Death in the guise of a skeleton. The Fifteen Joys of the Virgin and Seven Requests of Our Lord, both in French, open with a miniature of the Virgin and Child and the Trinity, respectively. Thirteen suffrages are illustrated with small square miniatures. A final bifolio contains prayers to be said at Communion, written in a different contemporary hand.
