Summary

Gilbert Tennent (1703-1764) was an Irish-American Presbyterian clergyman, and one of the leaders of the Great Awakening. Two of Tennent's sermons are included in this manuscript. The first sermon, dated 1744 or 1745, is about the sacrament, and begins with a reference to 1 Corinthians 11:24, "And when he had given thanks, he brake it, and said, Take, eat: this is my body, which is broken for you: this do in remembrance of me." The second sermon, on the beauty of Christ, begins with a reference to Galatians 2:16, "Knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law, but by the faith of Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Jesus Christ, that we might be justified by the faith of Christ, and not by the works of the law: for by the works of the law shall no flesh be justified." This sermon is not dated, but the years 1751 and 1756 are noted on the back of the manuscript.
